– Managing from the daily happenings standpoint
After the last climate changes increased events which happened in the Southern USA, with the passage of two consecutive hurricanes – Helene and Milton (Sept-26; Oct-9), we see them clearly associated with the risks of poor global management of the CO2 emissions in evidence, warming the ocean waters and bulking the phenomenons.
As I currently live in São Paulo City, more than 6.5 thousand kilometres distant, I just can imagine how I would be unfamiliar with an extremely hard situation to manage before and after the incidence of these environment related happenings resulting in huge man-made losses and, unfortunately, fatalities.
Here, my solidarity to all the families involved amid this enormous tragedy, hoping an as soon as possible recovery of the regular life “modus operandi” for those impacted by flood, winds, blackouts, water supply impairments and so on.
Thinking about solidarity and the local happenings, despite the distance from Florida/USA, São Paulo was not free from the occurrence of climate extremes, though at a lesser level, in Oct-11. Strong rains and winds were perceived in few hours but in abnormal volumes and velocities, considering some localized city areas affected.
Many people had property losses. Some of them, beyond these material losses, also were confronted with relative life losses. Again, my solidarity to all the families involved amid this local tragedy.
Succeeding the event, the deficit in the recover of electrical power for many areas, including public services, companies, offices, homes, and families affected by blackouts, was critical. The local energy distribution company, managing an aerial electrical power network exposed to big, as well poor managed, trees, apparently doesn’t established and implemented an acceptable contingency plan, closely and minimally studying the possible impacts of the extraordinary natural event, previously announced by the meteorologists.
Thus, a lot of clients were furious with the delay in the recovering process to regularize the power supply. Twenty for hours after the event, 1,3 million clients still kept in the dark, one day ago – Oct-20, yet 12.000 homes with power outage.
Traffic lights, at the streets, were unable to orientate the vehicles flow for some days in many districts of the city. One of these streets were located in the district where I live. Driving at those days was requiring increased attention, what was worrying me to go out and make the supermarket related chores. To my surprise, I have observed solidarity and patience among drivers in traffic. In regular days, the traffic is like a war field where the most part of the drivers are extremely rude with each other, generally trying to defend their own time in front of the “competitors”.
Curiously, under those circumstances, many of these affected drivers – without the traffic lights operating, were giving passage/priority for pedestrians and other drivers at the intersections.
These observations gave me the confirmation about the flourish of solidarity which human being presents under catastrophes, as already showed in many other events around the world and locally.
Combined with this facts, last Oct-19, was released a survey/research ordered by Fundação José Luiz Egydio Setúbal to Quaest Pesquisa e Consultoria about the Brazilian solidarity, published by Folha de S.Paulo. Among other conclusions, I was quite surprised with the declaration of that institute president: “Brazilians are supportive only under catastrophes”.
And the local data surveyed that caught my attention, and of course the researchers, was that, among the bigger challenges of the country pointed by the respondents, the environment (climate changes included), was at the final of the queue, cited by just 2% of the sample. The other cited challenges, in ascending order: security (11%), education (12%), health (17%), and, at the top of the research with the same participation of 19%, hunger, poverty and inequality, respectively, and can be seen as follows:
Which is the bigger challenge faced by Brazil today?
In %, single, stimulated response

One of the goals of the research was to serve as future parameter to the Philanthropic Organizations (POs), related to the donations, endowments and grants to be by them received and how develop strategies to reach them analyzing and assessing the data available.
“As Brazil is not for beginners”, as already said by the talented and complete artist, musician, composer and singer Tom Jobim, I was curious about the difficult to manage the POs in the country. The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, globally tracks indexes about the theme. That related to LatAm, and consequently Brazil, is reproduced bellow:
